According to the report, Welsh businesses reported a three-point increase in confidence in their own business prospects, reaching 38%. This, combined with a nine-point surge in optimism about the economy, resulted in a headline confidence reading of 43%, up from 37% in May. This upward trend indicates a strong belief in the potential for growth and success among businesses in Wales.
Looking ahead to the next six months, Welsh companies have identified key areas for growth, with investing in their team through training being a top priority for 47% of businesses. Additionally, 43% of companies are looking to evolve their offerings by introducing new products or services, while 26% are focused on investing in sustainability. These strategic priorities demonstrate a forward-thinking approach to business development and a commitment to staying competitive in the market.
Sam Noble, regional director for Wales at Lloyds Bank Commercial Banking, highlighted the positive momentum in Wales, stating, “This month’s Business Barometer shows Wales is bucking the UK-wide trend. As businesses look to capitalize on greater confidence, it’s important that they keep a close eye on working capital.” Noble emphasized the importance of managing working capital effectively to support growth and maintain financial flexibility.
The Business Barometer, which surveys 1,200 businesses monthly, provides valuable insights into economic trends both regionally and nationwide. While overall UK business confidence fell by nine points in June to a net balance of 41%, the level remained above the long-term average, indicating a continued resilience in the business landscape.
Despite the slight dip in confidence, businesses in Wales and across the UK remain optimistic about their trading prospects and the economy. Yorkshire and the Humber, the North East of England, and the East Midlands emerged as the most confident regions in June, showcasing a positive outlook for economic growth.
Sector-wise, results were mixed in June, with three out of four sectors experiencing a decline in trading prospects. Construction saw a significant drop of 16 points, while retail and services also reported decreases. However, manufacturing stood out with a two-point increase, reaching 51% in confidence, indicating a potential area of strength in the coming months.
Hann-Ju Ho, Senior Economist at Lloyds Bank Commercial Banking, noted the slight drop in business confidence in June but emphasized that the results are still in line with positive readings seen earlier in the year. Ho highlighted the decrease in businesses expecting price increases in the coming months, aligning with recent inflation figures. Additionally, the mixed results across sectors indicate varying levels of confidence, with construction, retail, and services experiencing declines.
Overall, the Business Barometer’s findings provide valuable insights into the economic landscape in Wales and the UK, highlighting areas of growth, challenges, and opportunities for businesses. The increase in business confidence in Wales reflects a positive outlook for the future, with companies poised to capitalize on new opportunities and drive economic growth in the region.
