“Bhangra and Beats” Night Market Celebrates South Asian Culture in San Francisco’s Financial District

The vibrant and colorful “Bhangra and Beats” Night Market brought a taste of South Asian culture to San Francisco’s Financial District on Friday night. The event, now in its second year, featured traditional Bhangra dancing, Indian music, delicious food, and unique goods from local South Asian small businesses.

One of the key figures behind the night market is Ranjan Dey, chef and owner of New Delhi Restaurant. Dey, who has been part of the event since its inception, worked closely with CEO and founder Katy Birnbaum to bring the celebration to life. Birnbaum highlighted the importance of showcasing the rich South Asian community in San Francisco and the Bay Area, stating that it was time for a beautiful celebration of their culture.

The night market attracted a diverse crowd, with people of all ages and backgrounds coming together to enjoy the festivities. Even Mayor London Breed made an appearance to join in on the fun. Birnbaum expressed her love for the variety of food available at the event, calling it the best place to sample different South Asian and Indian dishes.

Dey introduced a special dish called the “Joy Bom” for the event, a rice ball with spices, ghee, and pickles, coated in panko breadcrumbs. Inspired by the joy and happiness the event brings to people, Dey created this unique dish exclusively for the night market.

The “Bhangra and Beats” Night Market will continue throughout 2024, with upcoming dates in July, September, and November. This event serves as a platform for the South Asian community to come together and share their culture with the wider San Francisco community.
