“PolymerConnect: Addressing Critical Challenges in the Polymer Industry in Ireland and Northern Ireland”

The launch of PolymerConnect, an initiative by the Advanced Technologies in Manufacturing (ATIM) Cluster, is set to revolutionize the polymer industry in Ireland and Northern Ireland. With the aim of addressing critical challenges facing the sector, the project will create a comprehensive directory of over 350 polymer companies, academic institutions, and key sectoral partners across the island of Ireland.

The polymer industry in Ireland plays a vital role in driving innovation in various sectors such as MedTech, ICT, biopharma, agri-food, automotive, construction, and aerospace. However, the industry faces significant challenges including regulatory pressures, supply chain disruptions, and material production issues. The PolymerConnect project seeks to collect essential data from companies over the next 13 months to understand the economic contribution of the polymer sector and identify collaboration opportunities.

Funded by InterTradeIreland, the project aims to foster collaboration, drive innovation, and enhance competitiveness within the polymer industry. Damien McConville from InterTradeIreland emphasized the importance of PolymerConnect in strengthening the sector and driving economic and environmental benefits. CaitrĂona Mordan of ATIM Cluster highlighted the collaborative nature of the initiative, aiming to build a globally competitive polymer ecosystem across the island.

Gerry McNally of Northern Ireland Polymer Association (NIPA) stressed the importance of collaboration and knowledge sharing among businesses in the polymer sector to tackle shared challenges and capitalize on opportunities. Mark McAuley from IBEC emphasized the significance of the project in enhancing the visibility and recognition of Ireland’s polymer industry on both national and international stages.

The implementation of the PolymerConnect Project will involve data collection, interactive platform development, and engagement and promotion activities over the next 13 months. The project will be hosted on various platforms to reach a wide audience and raise awareness about the polymer ecosystem in Ireland.

Aligned with the Northern Ireland 10x Strategy, the PolymerConnect Project aims to foster innovation, increase R&D expenditure, and support the transition to a low-carbon economy. By strengthening linkages between companies and promoting cross-industry collaboration, the project is set to drive strategic engagement and innovation, positioning Ireland’s polymer sector for future success.
