Meta’s Threads Platform Gains Momentum with 175 Million Monthly Actives
Meta’s Threads app, a “friendlier” version of X/Twitter, has seen significant growth since its launch a year ago, with over 175 million monthly active users. Despite this growth, Threads still lags behind X in terms of scale and influence.
Elon Musk, owner of X, recently announced a surge in U.S. usage, but conflicting reports suggest a different trend. Musk’s controversial decisions and public spats have led some users to seek alternative platforms like Mastodon and Bluesky.
Meta capitalized on the discord surrounding X, gaining nearly 100 million monthly actives in the first three months of Threads’ launch. By the end of 2023, this number had grown to 130 million, and now exceeds 150 million as of the first quarter of this year.
Entertainment and music-related content, particularly Taylor Swift’s presence on Threads, have been key drivers of engagement among Gen Z users. Despite its smaller scale, Threads’ focus on fostering friendly conversation may be what sets it apart from other platforms.
The success of Threads will ultimately be measured by its ability to drive engagement and monetization. As the platform continues to evolve, it will be interesting to see how it competes with larger social media giants like TikTok and X.
