Celebrating 150 Years: The Johnson Family Farm in Hambden Township

Johnson Family Farm in Hambden Township Celebrates 150 Years of Success

Agriculture has long been a cornerstone of Northeast Ohio history, and the Johnson Family Farm in Hambden Township is a prime example of the enduring legacy of farming in the region. Celebrating its 150th anniversary this year, the Johnson Family Farm has stood the test of time by adapting to changing needs and trends in the industry.

Founded in 1874 by Dave Johnson’s great-great-great-grandfather, the farm has evolved over the years to meet the demands of the community. Originally a supplier of dairy products and crops like corn, hay, oats, and wheat, the farm transitioned to focus on crops, maple syrup production, and timber management as supermarkets replaced small suppliers.

In 1982, the farm integrated a landscaping division, which has since evolved into Mapledale Farms Inc. The company now supplies topsoil, mulch, gravel, and other landscaping goods for retail and wholesale, in addition to offering landscape design services. The transition from farming to landscaping was a natural one for the Johnson family, as the knowledge needed for both fields overlaps in terms of soil management and cultivation.

In response to the demand for maintenance-free materials, the farm has also added poly-furniture to its offerings. The farm’s commitment to sustainability is evident in its recycling practices, including using waste oil to heat buildings and creating biofuel from recycled vegetable oil to power diesel equipment.

As the eighth generation of the Johnson family prepares to take the reins, Dave Johnson emphasizes the importance of passing down the farm’s history and values to future generations. With his children and grandchildren involved in the business, the Johnson Family Farm is poised to continue thriving for years to come.

In addition to their agricultural pursuits, the Johnson family is deeply involved in the community, with Dave serving as a Hambden Township trustee and heading the Chardon Rotary. Through volunteer work and fundraising efforts, the family gives back to the community that has supported them for 150 years.

The Johnson Family Farm’s 150th anniversary is a testament to the resilience and adaptability of family farms in Northeast Ohio. As they continue to evolve and innovate, the Johnsons are ensuring that their farm remains a historically significant and thriving part of the region’s agricultural landscape.
