The Evolving Landscape of Philanthropy in India: Insights from the India Philanthropy Report 2021

Private philanthropic funding in India has reached new heights, with contributions totaling approximately Rs 64,000 crore in 2020, according to the India Philanthropy Report 2021 by Bain & Company and Dasra. This surge in funding has been driven by individuals, family foundations, and corporates, who are actively supporting initiatives in education, healthcare, rural development, and environmental sustainability.

The concept of philanthropy is deeply ingrained in India’s cultural and social ethos, with the idea of “Daan” (giving) resonating across all major religions in the country. This tradition of giving back to society has paved the way for significant philanthropic activities that are making a tangible impact on social development and economic growth.

Amitabh Jaipuria, CEO of Accelerate Indian Philanthropy, highlighted the motivations behind philanthropy in India, emphasizing the desire to positively impact society as a key driver for many philanthropists. He also noted the role of personal values and beliefs of Ultra High Networth Individuals (UHNIs) in shaping their philanthropic activities.

Jaipuria discussed the evolving trends in Indian philanthropy, pointing to the increasing use of technology and innovation to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of philanthropic initiatives. He highlighted education, skill development, healthcare, environmental sustainability, and gender issues as prominent focus areas for philanthropic funding.

Looking ahead, Jaipuria expressed optimism about the future of philanthropy in India, predicting a “golden age” for Indian philanthropy in the next 20 years. He emphasized the importance of flexibility, adaptability, and a willingness to embrace new approaches to navigate and contribute effectively to India’s evolving social landscape.

As philanthropy continues to play a crucial role in addressing social challenges and driving positive change in India, the future looks promising with a growing emphasis on strategic, impactful giving that can make a lasting difference in the lives of millions.
