Italian Shipbuilder Fincantieri Acquires Leonardo S.p.A’s Underwater Armaments Systems Business

Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri has made a significant move in the underwater and naval defense sector with the announcement of its acquisition of Leonardo S.p.A’s “Underwater Armaments Systems” business. This strategic decision, valued at €300 million as fixed Enterprise Value with a potential additional €115 million based on growth assumptions, solidifies Fincantieri’s position as a leader in the industry.

The acquisition includes Italy’s underwater acoustic technologies, a crucial element in Fincantieri’s growth strategy for the underwater sector. This move will not only enhance the company’s military applications but also pave the way for innovative solutions in security for critical infrastructure and new products in the civilian sector.

The “Underwater Armaments Systems” business line, originally established as Whitehead Alenia Sistemi Subacquei S.p.A., has a rich history in submarine defense systems, including torpedoes, countermeasures, and sonars. With a revenue of approximately €160 million in 2023, this acquisition is expected to further strengthen Fincantieri’s capabilities in this field.

The finalization of the acquisition is set for the beginning of 2025, marking a new chapter for Fincantieri as it continues to expand its presence in the underwater and naval defense sector. Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting development.
