CNN CEO Mark Thompson Announces Restructuring of Newsgathering Operations and Digital Focus

CNN CEO Mark Thompson is leading a major restructuring effort to modernize the network’s business for the digital era. In a detailed memo to staffers, Thompson outlined plans to capitalize on CNN’s global footprint and shift towards a more digitally focused approach.

As part of the changes, approximately 100 employees out of CNN’s 3,500-person global workforce will be laid off. The goal is to streamline newsgathering operations and enhance collaboration across CNN bureaus worldwide.

Virginia Moseley, a longtime CNN news executive, will oversee the unified newsgathering operation, implementing a story management model called “Follow the Sun” to ensure seamless handoffs of stories across different regions.

In addition to revamping newsgathering processes, Thompson announced the creation of a “TV Futures Lab” to develop streaming and on-demand programming for CNN’s parent company’s streaming service, Max. The company also plans to launch new ad-supported streaming channels for CNN Originals and CNN Espanol.

Looking ahead, Thompson aims to launch CNN’s first digital subscription product by the end of the year, focusing on lifestyle journalism topics where CNN has a competitive edge. This move comes as part of a broader effort to rebuild CNN’s business for the digital future under Thompson’s leadership.

Overall, the restructuring efforts led by Thompson signal a strategic shift towards digital innovation and growth for CNN, positioning the network for success in the evolving media landscape.
