Survey: Republicans blame government, Democrats blame corporate greed for inflation

The latest Axios Vibes survey by The Harris Poll has revealed some interesting insights into how Americans view the causes of inflation. According to the survey, Republicans are twice as likely as Democrats to blame the government for inflation, while Democrats are twice as likely as Republicans to blame corporate greed.

This messaging battle over who is most responsible for higher prices on goods and services in the post-pandemic world could take center stage when President Biden and former President Trump meet for Thursday night’s debate.

The survey found that 41% of overall respondents believe government spending and policies are most to blame for higher prices, while 39% point the finger at companies bolstering profits and 20% blame supply chain disruptions. Interestingly, Gen X and Boomers are more likely to blame corporate greed, while Gen Z and millennials are more likely to blame the government.

Top Biden administration economists have been calling out corporate America for raising prices more than their costs have risen, and it seems that some voters, particularly Democrats, are buying into that message.

Looking ahead, just 41% of respondents overall are optimistic that the government will “manage the economy” through the end of this year, and 38% are optimistic that the government will ensure fair prices for goods and services, lower inflation, or set junk fees. Democrats are more optimistic than Republicans across these categories, while independents align more closely with Republicans.

It will be interesting to see how this debate over the causes of inflation plays out in the upcoming election and how both parties will use this issue to appeal to voters.
