The stock market witnessed a negative trend on Thursday as both the Sensex and Nifty closed in the red. Sensex declined by 0.62 per cent to close at 72,488.99, while Nifty plunged by 0.69 per cent to close at 21,995.85. Market volatility, as indicated by India VIX, also saw an increase, reflecting the uncertain market conditions.

Nifty Media was the only major sector that closed positively, while sectors like Nifty FMCG, Nifty Financial Services, Nifty Pharma, and Nifty Energy were among the top losers. In terms of individual stocks, Bharti Airtel, Power Grid, and Bajaj Auto were among the top gainers, while Apollo Hospitals, Titan, and Nestle India were among the top losing stocks from the Nifty 50.

The broader market sentiment was negative, with more stocks declining than advancing. This negative sentiment was reflected in the performance of Nifty Midcap and Nifty Smallcap, which closed lower by 0.49 per cent and 0.28 per cent respectively.

Overall, the market closed on a cautious note, with investors closely monitoring the global economic and geopolitical developments that could impact market sentiment in the coming days.
