Elon Musk Threatens to Ban iPhones with iOS 18 at Tesla and SpaceX due to Apple’s Integration of ChatGPT
After a period of peace, Elon Musk charges against Apple again!
During the WWDC24 keynote, Apple confirmed that versions of iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia will be integrated with ChatGPT, as had been rumored for weeks. While this is a feature that most users of the company’s devices expect to see in action, for Tesla CEO Elon Musk, it would be one of the reasons to stop using the iPhone with iOS 18.
Senior Vice President of Software Engineering Craig Federighi explained that users will have full control over when ChatGPT is used and that data shared with OpenAI will not be logged or stored. However, Musk isn’t entirely confident in this assurance. He stated in a publication that he will ban iPhones with iOS 18 in Tesla and SpaceX due to this new function.
In his publication, Musk expressed his concerns about the integration of OpenAI at the OS level by Apple. He tweeted, “If Apple integrates OpenAI at the operating system level, then Apple devices will be banned from my companies. That is an unacceptable security breach.”
Apple Intelligence, the company’s new artificial intelligence structure for new versions of operating systems, will allow access to ChatGPT on iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia for specific functions. ChatGPT access is built into Siri and writing tools on all Apple platforms, allowing users to take advantage of its knowledge and interpretation abilities without the need to change tools or install anything.
Whether Musk will follow through with his ban on iPhones with iOS 18 remains to be seen when the beta version of iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia is released in the fall of 2024. Additional features, platforms, and languages will be added starting in 2025.
