Honoring Essential Service Providers: Suffolk Salutes and More Events in the Community

Suffolk Credit Union’s ‘Suffolk Salutes’ celebration is honoring essential service providers in the region throughout the month. The credit union is recognizing nurses, police, EMS responders, veterans, and active military, coinciding with national recognition weeks. They are also collecting donations for local nonprofit Paws of War, which supports veterans and active military with shelter animals in need of homes.

Henry Schein recently hosted a ‘Carry the Load’ event in support of the U.S. military, with over 200 Team Schein members, friends, and family walking 1.5 miles to show their support. The event, sponsored by Henry Schein, featured remarks from various community leaders and organizations, including Congressman Steve Israel and the United Veterans Organization of Nassau County.

ELIJA (Empowering Long Island’s Journey through Autism) is helping aging-out students with autism find housing options as they transition to adulthood. Founder and CEO Deb Thivierge organized a conference at Hofstra University to provide families with information and resources for their journey through autism. Autism advocate Trish Calandra was honored with the Champion of Hope Award at the conference.

Maple Family Centers will be hosting youth scholarship tournaments at their bowling centers in Rockville Centre, Coram, and Queens. The Peter J. LaSpina Memorial Scholarship Tournament on June 2 will award $3,000 in scholarships to winners in various categories. The Junior Masters Finals on June 30 will be open to junior bowlers in two divisions based on their average. Both events aim to further the education of youth bowlers in the community.
